When you are desperate for a child the extreme measures that will be taken and expenses become a fly in the ointment not an obstacle. For Leslie and Alex, a couple with the financial means at their disposal will do anything and plan to continue the process until a baby is achieved. An heir is expected to carry on the family legacy but a touch of obsession at always getting what they want is also a very apparent factor. A powerful and successful couple who deserve it all will find a way to get it all regardless of the means brokered and that is exactly what they do. The price they pay in dollars is nothing compared to the sacrifice this one choice will have on so many lives.
Alex may be more committed, but Leslie is mote to say no to every procedure he comes up with. When the last one he finds provides the ultimate goal of not one but two children what should have been joy turns into a nightmare. The children are beautiful and perfect but the parents seem to have become anything but normal, human beings. They lock their children away from them for fear of what might happen when in fact neither Leslie nor Alex know what happened in the dark room so many years ago that created this nightmare they are now living. Through each page the secrets grow more horrifying and the children know, even at 10 years old they have to escape or die trying.
It takes a very vivid imagination to come up with a story that is designed to scare the reader into a state of fear so intense the lights stay on. However Chase Novak has done exactly that and in such an original fashion that each page provides a new and more terrifying event from the prior paragraph.
