A New Project & What It’s Like Being MARRIED TO a Romance Author

Gaelen: Hello, everyone!  And a big thank you to Mary for inviting me back to your awesome blog.

Well, some of you romance readers might recognize my name from the world of Regency historicals, but today I have a new side project to announce, in a new genre, under a new pen name (E.G. Foley) and I brought a special mystery guest along with me today to help me tell you all about it.

:::Drum roll please::: Ta-daaa!

Presenting…! My very own real-life hero, Eric – my husband – who happens to be my co-author on THE LOST HEIR, a fantasy adventure novel for ages 10 & up.

And now, heeeere’e Eric!!!

Eric: Hi All! Hi, Mary. First of all, thanks for inviting us to your blog! We’re delighted to be here! Before I tell you about our new project, people often ask me what it’s like being the husband of a famous author. Well it has lots of cool perks. Things like research travel, stimulating book discussions, a wife who works from home, and many endearing fan letters to name a few.

But it also has its down sides. People can be a little mean sometimes to those in the public eye and that gets my protective side riled up ‘cuz that’s my girl. I had to get used to a certain amount of questionable comments that would pop up here and there, even within the family, LOL. And I quote, “How’s those SMUT books coming along?” Grrr! Oh, well, it can’t be avoided.

Then there’s the fact that creative people are also not always, er, the easiest to deal with day in and day out. They tend to be an EMOTIONAL lot!

Oh yeah, and I had to get used to pictures of shirtless, overly muscular men plastered all over Gaelen’s office. Harrumph. It’s no wonder I’m obsessed with exercise. It’s a lot of pressure on a guy! Come on ladies – you know those men don’t exist in the real world! Ha ha.

Gaelen: Leave us our illusions. *g*

Eric: Always interrupting me! *smiles* Anyway, Gaelen and I have always thought it would be a blast to write together. We finally acted on it 2 years ago when we sat down and created a middle grade series called The Gryphon Chronicles. At some point in the process, we realized that we needed to separate the Gaelen Foley romance author name from our KidLit work. So we created the penname E.G. Foley (the “E” stands for Eric and the “G” stands for Gaelen). I’m proud to tell you, that after countless late nights and weekends, our first book, THE LOST HEIR (The Gryphon Chronicles, Book 1) is finally out. It was a ton of hard work, but we are so proud of the final result. It was definitely a labor of love.

THE LOST HEIR falls into the same genre as Harry Potter, Inkheart, and Percy Jackson books. This wonderful genre features larger than life action and fantasy creatures, along with a dose of magic, and a struggle of good versus evil. We combined this with ghosts and the historical setting of Victorian London, along with some steampunk elements for a unique new flavor within the genre.

Though this is officially a “Middle Grade” novel, it is written to appeal to a broad readership, including adults. There are interesting adult characters with a role to play in our story as well as the kid characters, so really there’s something for everyone. If you like to laugh, if you like “family movie” type stories with lots of fantasy and adventure, and to feel a bit like a kid again, then we wrote this book for you!

Gaelen: THE LOST HEIR is safe for family read-alouds or classrooms (i.e. no curse words, no gore, spooky but not too scary, with lots of humor.) Eric forgot to mention that he is a teacher of this age group so he’s very well versed in what keeps tweens engaged and entertained. You know if he can make math class fun, compared to that, a fantasy novel is a snap.

Eric: Aw, shucks. J Gaelen and I are hoping to make this into a long series. We have quite a few of the stories loosely plotted out already, with villains, creatures, magic, and lessons to be learned. Readers can expect magical adventures of all kinds—ghosts, fairies, mermaids, pirates, evil sorcerers, anyone?

Gaelen: We loved writing this book and we hope you’ll check it out, either for yourself or the kids in your life.

Eric: Thank you so much for having us, Mary! If your readers would like to come and check out some sample chapters or view THE LOST HEIR book trailer video, they are welcome to visit us at www.EGFoley.com.

  9. Sounds great. I have two teen daughters and one of them loves the genre, especially the Inkheart and the Percy Jackson books. The whole family loved Harry Potter and read all the books (that were out at the time) before the movies made the books even more popular. I hope you two have success with this new adventure!

  10. I've been enjoying YA books ever since Harry Potter and my one daughter, although in her 20's, loves them and keeps me up to date on the good ones which this sounds like to me. How easy was it to write this together? I always think of writing as such a solitary thing to do.

  11. Congratulations Gaelen and Eric on the new book. It looks like you enjoyed working together. I know working with your spouse has challenges since I do it myself.

  13. Hi everyone!

Thanks for all the warm wishes on our book!

DJ - we've had good feedback from boys! I hope your grandson gets a chance to read it. :)

Danielle - it was/is a lot of fun writing together! I guess we'll never be one of those couples who has nothing to talk about. The opposite - we never shut up. *g*

Rose and Debbie - thank you both!

Carol - good eye!!! You're right, that's Phipps. It's where we had our first date, and our wedding. :)

Diane - I'm glad you enjoyed the interview. We always love blogging with Mary.

See more in next comment box...

  14. More...

Liz - thanks and good luck! You never know who the lucky randomizer will pick...

Chris - the co-star of The Lost Heir is a 10 year old girl, a little costermonger kid with red hair who takes her pint-sized dog with her everywhere goes. *g*

Molly and Catslady - it's always fun when you discover things before the rest of the world does, isn't it?? Unfortunately I was one of the last to hear about Harry! Better late than never. (I must have had deadlines, lol.)

Maureen - thanks, and I hear ya. Yeah, I guess there are days when we wish we could "fire" each other. LOL. You guys too? But mostly we are BFF's.

Karen - thank you so much! Been thinking of you. I hope your girls like it, and hope to see you in the not-too-distant future. :)

    1. Awesome! Reading kids remind me of me when I was little. *g* I never realized back then that actual PEOPLE created stories. As if the books just magically appeared by themselves, like living things.

Yes, the place where that pic was taken is special to us... it's where we had our first date AND ended up getting married. :)

Hope all is well in Hawaii, and that your hubby gets home soon from Korea.

    1. Thanks, Dorothy! I try not to go overboard with the hot guy pix, but it definitely helps for "picturing" the heroes of my romances.

As to read alouds, I have heard that kids as young as 6 or so are able to understand and enjoy the story. But as for independent reading, that would be more suitable for 4th grade-ish and up.

I'm sure the little guys like it when Mom/Grandma/Auntie whoever does the voices.

Can you make yourself sound like a talking spider? *gg*

I agree, the cover's brilliant. I am so happy I found Mike Motz and his group of illustrators/ artists, and of course, romance's own Kim Killion, who did the graphic design. I'll pass along the kudos!

    1. Hi Veronica! We're baaaack. *g* Right now, just Book 1 of the Gryphon Chronicles (The Lost Heir) is out, but we are expecting to put out Book 2, Jake & The Giant, in February (give or take a month).

Hard to say exactly, it could be up to a good 10 books or so, but we're going to focus on putting them out every 8 months, hopefully pegging them seasonally with things like Halloween (spooky stories), Summer/Beach (high seas adventure type stories), springtime stories (various) and a few shorter Christmas stories, too, cuz how fun is a Victorian Christmas??

If you sign up for our EG Foley newsletter, that's the easiest way to find out when new installments in the series are ready.

And THANK YOU very much for your enthusiasm! Right now, the Gryphon Chronicles is still in the fledgling stages, but we have lots of fun things in store for our readers of all ages.

      Have a great night!

  26. Thanks everyone, and thanks again so much, Mary, for inviting Eric and me to your blog today. We had a great time, as always!

Thank you guys for your interest in the LOST HEIR. If you have time, come see our book trailer video for the LOST HEIR on our website. It's fun. *g* Though I may be biased. My sister teaches 3rd graders and showed it to them, and she said they wanted to see it 5 times and shrieked (jokingly) every time the villain appeared on the screen. LOL. It's up at www.EGFoley.com on the main page.

We also have a discount where you can get the paperback direct from us (instead of an online bookstore) for $9.99. See the Store page. It's much more do-able than the cover price when you buy it thru the big online stores. Thru us it just ships direct from the printer to you and we don't have to go thru the middleman. So it's pretty simple, just like ordering anything online (invoiced through Paypal.)

We just wanted to make it as easy as possible for kids/families to enjoy our story.

    Thanks again & goodnight!

  29. Awesome interview!!! I'm sure that this series of books will be excellent just as we have grown to expect with Gaelen's historical romance novels!!! I can't put her novels down once I start reading!!! If Eric is half as talented as Gaelen then there's no way that it won't hit the top of the charts!!!
