Pop Culture Saturday: The Ultimate Reboot - DALLAS returns

We have a winner from last week's blogs - Estella!

On our way home from Waikiki, my kids rolled their eyes when the radio played an "eighties" song.  My oldest replied, "Nothing good came from the eighties."  Ah, the Eighties - big hair, big money, and big hats ala DALLAS - the iconic prime time soap opera from 1978-1991.  As a teenager, I was a huge fan until I left for college in 1983.   So I was curious to watch its contemporary reboot ... what a reboot it was!

It opens with John Ross waking up to find his drill on Southfork about to blow - he discovered oil on his grandmother's precious ranch.    Bobby learns he has cancer on his birthday ... and two days before his son's wedding.  Christopher is marrying Rebecca on the rebound after Elena broke his heart.  Elena is the daughter of the Ewing's long time housekeeper.   Elena is now sleeping (and scheming) with John Ross.  Sue Ellen is well respected in Dallas and considering a run for Governor   JR suffers from clinical depression and lives in a sanatorium.   He is unresponsive to Bobby's visits ... but when John Ross tells him that he found oil on Southfork, JR perks up,

"Blood may be thicker than water, but oil is thicker than both."

The next hour gives in to soap opera troupes - blackmail, double crossing, and unrequited love.

Were you a fan of the groundbreaking night time soaps such as DALLAS, KNOTS LANDING, and DYNASTY?  Are you a fan of the current night time soapss, such as DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, ARMY WIVES, or even the reality series REAL HOUSEWIVES?

One randomly selected commenter from this week's blogs wins a book choice from my convention stash.  This giveaway is open to all readers.  Comments are open through Friday, June 22, 10 pm in Hawaii.  I'll post the winner on Saturday, June 23.

  1. When Dallas, Dynasty and Knotts Landing were on I was living with my grandmother and she watched them all so I watched them because of her. I never really got into any of them and I didn't watch the reboot of Dallas. Just not my kind of show. Hubby watches Army Wives *I know, I didn't expect him to like this show either* so I watch this with him, but we don't watch any of the other shows.

  2. Way back when, I watched Dallas and Falcon Pass (the one set at a California winery.) I don't watch much TV anymore. I didn't watch the new Dallas or the other shows you mentioned.

  3. I grew up watching Dallas. I watched the reboot. The younger characters need some acting lessons. There wasn't nearly enough Sue Ellen in the story. Hopefully the show will improve in time.

  4. Yes, absolutely, I loved them all, Dallas, Knots Landing, Dynasty and Desperate Housewives. I was absolutely gutted when they were all cancelled. I have taped the new "Dallas" but, as of yet, have not had time to watch it.

I was a huge fan of the big hair and shoulder pads. lol :-)

  5. Kim, you know that I don't watch much television at all, but I couldn't pass this up! I was right there in the thick of things with John Ross! Kind of cheesy and I doubt if I'll watch any more. But it was great seeing it again.

  8. I did not watch any of those nighttime soaps. I wasn't a regular viewer of Desperate Housewives, but I've seen and enjoyed a few episodes.

  9. My Mom & I used to watch Dallas - I think it was on Friday nights while my Dad went bowling. Can't believe how much time has passed. I haven;t watched the new version, but I've seen the cast all over the place on talk shows.

  11. Of those I watched one - Dynasty. I remember going into labor and waiting for the show to be over (not that it mattered because it was a 29 hr. labor).

  13. I wasn't really into these shows way back when, so I'm not terribly interested in the new show out now. I did not see the re-boot.

  16. Hi Kim!

My husband and I were big fans of Dallas but not Dynasty or Knots Landing. I think my husband liked it because of JR! I guess because of our age we never got into the shows like Desperate Housewives, etc. Now if you want to talk about shows he could connect to it was MASH but then we had seen it in the movies when it was first released and the TV series was a natural for us to watch since my husband is a Vietnam Vet.

Nowadays he watches mostly sports, let me list the ways, and I either watch shows like HGTV and make a list of what I'd like HIM to do around the homestead and am usually reading a book at the same time!

  17. Oh I certainly did watch Dallas and Dynasty. They were the only adult shows i our house I could watch. The kids wre all about their cartoons during the day and at night I got to step into the adult world of suspense, intrigue and blackmail. lol
I don't watch TV much at all these days except for American Pickers, HGTV and The History Channel.

  18. I may have watched a few episodes from Dallas when I was young, but that was just because the adults were watching it. I used to watch Desperate Housewives but only because Gale Harold was on for a short time. After he left, I stopped watching it. Lol. I may have to check out this new Dallas. :)

  19. Dallas and Dynasty were favorites of mine but the shower scene where Pam dreamed that Bobby died sort of ended my interest.
