Pop Culture Saturday: The Avengers, Ka'ena Point, and Aeia Loop

Keiki (children) play near Ka'ena Point

We have winners from last week:

The Ultimate Reboot:  DALLAS
- Karen wins a book choice from my convention stash.

Aloha to Beach Reading
- Kim H wins a book choice from my convention stash.

Sara Luck's CLAIMING THE HEART
- Dani wins a print copy.

My family was a winner last night as THE AVENGERS arrived at the base theater.  My children and I enjoyed the movie ... even though I am not familiar with the characters' back story except for Iron Man and Captain America.   I thought the movie was a little slow in the beginning, picked up momentum in the middle, and slowed again in the end with endless aliens!   The dialogue was peppered with funny quips that mirrored the characters' personalities.  Robert Downey Jr. almost stole the show as Iron Man ... but it truly was a team effort with Captain  America, Thor, the Incredible Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawk.    I can see why the movie has broken box office records but I still prefer last summer's CAPTAIN AMERICA, probably because of its military connection.    My favorite movie for this summer is still BATTLESHIP with the Mighty Mo.

This morning, my oldest son is backpacking with the Scouts to Ka'ena Point.   They are camping overnight and had to carry everything, including water, food, tents, and sleeping bags.  The terrain is fairly flat but isolated.  If I had to accompany him, I would have purchased a beat up rolling suitcase from the Thrift Shop and just dragged it along the dirt path.   Lucky for my son, I didn't have to accompany him, thus saving him from embarrassment.

This afternoon, I am hiking with my younger son around the Aeia Loop.  It offers unparalleled views of Pearl Harbor and the Halawa Valley.  The trail gives hikers a glimpse of a crashed Japanese Zero from that fateful date on December 7, 1941.  I'll post pictures tomorrow at ALOHA ON MY MIND at this link.

What do you have planned for this weekend?  One randomly selected commenter from this week's blogs wins a book choice from my convention stash.  This giveaway is open to all readers.  Comments are open through Saturday, June 30, 10 pm in Hawaii.  I'll post the winner on Sunday, July 1.

  11. Hi Kim!

Both my sons were Boy Scouts which really came in handy around here when we had a hurricane or blizzard came through because we had all of their camping equipment from kerosene lamps to cook stoves! Several times we even cooked in the fireplace which my husband built and is a reproduction of the "old time" fireplaces that they have up in Sturbridge, MA which even has a bake oven. Yup, give me a snow storm and I can still bake!

Tomorrow I get to spend the day with my 4 year old grandson and my husband is heading off to Boston to see the Red Sox. We live in Rhode Island and he won two free tickets to the game tomorrow and is going with his best friend who is also a Red Sox fanatic. To me watching grass grow is more interesting but I'm hoping they have a great time (and the Red Sox win!). For myself I'll be taking my grandson (and a book) down to the lake and since it's suppose to be a hot day just six back and relax under a tree while I watch my grandson build sand castles. I can't think of anything I'd rather do!

  15. I'm having a relaxing weekend, with a little bit of shopping, some reading and surfing the internet on my agenda. It was kind of dreary and rainy today, so I didn't go outside except for the shopping. Tomorrow might be rainy too, so I'm looking forward to more reading, my favorite thing.

  18. Thanks, Kim and congrats to the other winners. This weekend we're sitting idle at a truck stop in Hillsboro, TX, waiting to make a delivery tomorrow morning. Realized I didn't miss the climate that affects my allergies or all the crickets this time of year. Of course it does help that I'm within walking distance of the outlet mall, even if most of them are closed. Have a grest weekend!
