As I wrote on SOS Aloha, we bought a new laptop for me to write my blog. My desktop is just about kaput! To add to the chaos, we rescued a stray cat that we believe is the sister of another stray cat we rescued last year! This morning, we planned a group visit to Ko Olina - a beach resort. But it is raining ... so I now have time to write today's guest post!
| Ko Olina offers peaceful moments. |
Let's start with cats ... on this day in 1978, Garfield debut. He sets the Guinness World Record for the world's most widely syndicated comic strip. I'm not a big fan of Garfield as he is not that cuddly ... but I do love cats, especially ginger cats.

I do glance through the Honolulu paper to keep up with what is happening around Hawaii ... it notably does not feature the political mud slinging on the mainland that will only increase with the November election.
Ah, the November election. Hawaii is a given for Obama so we don't have any national campaigning ... but we do have some local mudslinging. Some candidates support the light rail for Honolulu, others don't. Rail is a hot topic now that Honolulu bumped LA as the American city with the worst traffic.
Paradise has outgrown its infrastructure but it still has its perks! Reading a book on the beach one of them! Do you have a favorite comic strip? Do you read the daily newspaper? How is the traffic in your city? One randomly selected commenter from this week's blogs wins a book choice from my convention stash. This giveaway is open to all readers. Comments are open through Friday, June 22, 10 pm in Hawaii. I'll post the winner on Saturday, June 23.
Mahalo,

I have the Garfield comic sent to my email every day lol. And LOLcats is one of my favorite sites. My very first cat was a ginger cat named Tiger. I just inherited one of my daughter's (actually this is the 3rd from her) which is a ginger cat named Chee Chee. And traffic in and out of Pittsburgh is horrendous.
ReplyDeleteI read a daily paper, but not the comics. I live in a small town(pop. appx 4000) so no traffic problems.
ReplyDeleteI do read the paper and the comics section. I miss Peanuts and Calvin and Hobbes, but my current favorite is Pearls Before Swine. Traffic is a nightmare in NYC.
ReplyDeleteI get my news on line and I don't read comics. Traffic in Pittsburgh isn't so bad when you compare it to a lot of other places.
ReplyDeleteHouston traffic is not pleasant. Anything under 45 minutes constitutes a GOOD work commute! I glance at comics infrequently, usually on my way to the crossword puzzle. Have fun with the new computer!
ReplyDeleteI stopped getting the newspaper delivered a few years ago - they would just stack up. Sunday edition was my favorite with the comics section. I always enjoyed 'For Better for Worse' - such funny family stories.
ReplyDeleteHi Kim!
ReplyDeleteI can still remember my father sitting at the kitchen table in the morning reading the newspaper and no matter how little money I may have had at the time have kept the tradition alive since I graduated from High School in up-state New York.
Since I graduated I've lived in Arizona and Florida and then after getting married moved to Rhode Island when my husband got out of the Navy during Vietnam. We've always had the paper delivered and back then the paperboy would deliver it on your porch so it didn't get wet when was raining or the snow was coming down. Now it's delivered by car and literally thrown out of the window somewhere near the road so during the winter it's sometimes buried in a pile of snow if the snowplow comes before we have a chance to go out to retrieve it! When my sons were paperboys they used to deliver it where requested and that often meant around to the back door, to hold onto papers or not have them delivered at all when on vacation. I long for the good old days.
In the good old days you actually knew who was delivering the paper. In the good old days the articles were all written by someone who actually lived in your town and not somewhere from parts unknown. They also actually responsible for the stories they wrote! How novel that would be now!
Now that I'm past 60 I read the obituaries first - just to make sure I'm not listed there! The main thing I do now is to notice how the Police beat section now lists so many crimes instead of when they reported how a dog had taken down Mrs. Smith laundry lines and she had to wash all the clothes again!
So tomorrow morning I'll get up and start a pot of coffee to collect the paper to read before I head out to work.
Not a fan of Garfield?! I always loved him. Though I don't have the time to read comics anymore, I did used to enjoy them.
ReplyDeleteReading on the beach would be a huge perk to living in paradise =)
I used to always read the newspaper...now I am more into reading the news on the internet. As for the traffic, it can be bad. Not as bad as LA, but still can be bad here in San Diego.
ReplyDeleteI usually read my local news online. But every once in a while, I'll buy a Sunday paper just for the experience of paper and the comics :)
ReplyDeleteOur traffic is horrible. I live in Omaha, NE which you wouldn't think would be bad but it feels like our city pop has doubled in the last 10 yrs. We have several main streets and all interstate so it gets crazy. Out of towners are always saying how weird it is that people in Nebraska are so nice... as long as they aren't in their cars!
I love Garfield comic. My cat is gray.
ReplyDeleteThis is going to date me but my favorite comic is Calvin and Hobbs. Used to love reading it daily!
ReplyDeleteI love comics. My favorite was Far Side. I wish they still ran it. I also lobed calvin & hobbs. The cat & the boy were great together. Thanks for the giveaway.

I like Blondie. I read the newspaper.
ReplyDeleteI used to love reading comics but have not read them in years with any regularity. I did always love Garfield. I actually had a Ginger cat that I named Pookie (the name of Garfield's bear).
ReplyDeleteI don't really have a favorite comic strip now, but I used to love reading The Far Side by Gary Larson. I don't read a daily newspaper these days, I get most of my news online. I live in Orlando and the traffic can get pretty bad on our main freeway, I-4, especially if there's an accident. I don't live that far from work, so I stick to surface streets and it isn't too bad.
ReplyDeleteI live in a LARGE country town & for the most part the traffic is quite civilized. There are the obvious peak times for traffic & the hoons, but it's pretty good.
ReplyDeleteI read our Town paper and everything else as far as news I watch in the morning. Haven't read a comic strip in eons lol. But I too liked Calvin and Hobbs. My ex got me into that one. Thanks again Kim for your gorgeous pictures. Traffic in our town is horrendous during supper hour on all the main streets otherwise it's pretty quiet.

Garfield has always been my favorite but it's been a while since I read it.
ReplyDeleteI've brought books to the beach before but can never get into them. I'm too distracted by other things such as playing in the water or other sports. I really like the beachesand parks in my area. They're fun to explore!
ReplyDeleteDon't read the newspaper daily any more but do read the weekend editions. Usually get my news from CBSTV news.
ReplyDeleteI remember when Garfield came out and followed it every day but no long read except on Sunday's. I have a cat that looks alot like Garfield but it is not fat and has longer hair. Of course his name is Garfield.

well never get the paper. used to to get our coupons just on sunday. but now adays not hardly at all. trffic in my area. LOL my town and county has ONE red light . so not very heavy traffic, excpet in middle of night for some odd reason
ReplyDeleteblackroze37@yahoo.com
I read the paper on Sundays. There are a lot of people who commute in our town so there is a lot of traffic during the rush hours getting to the main highways.
