Pop Culture Saturday: A long time ago ...
We have winners from last week!
- Season Finales: Johanna wins a book choice from my convention stash.
- Diamond Jubilee Celebration Hop: CBails wins a book from my convention stash.
A long time ago ... thirty five years this weekend ... in a theater far away ... Miami's Dadeland ... I joined my friends for an afternoon movie. I had no idea the theater was only showing a new Sci-Fi movie, STAR WARS. I went in kicking and I came out cheering.
I remember the words floating in space, introducing us to the rebellion. I remember the music changing tempo. I remember it was more than space fights and alien creatures ... it was freedom fighting and human compassion in an alternate universe.
STAR WARS changed our perception of science fiction, deep space, and special effects. What is your favorite sci-fi story? One randomly selected commenter wins a book choice from my convention stash. This giveaway is open to all readers. Comments are open through Friday, June 1, 10 pm in Hawaii. I'll post the winner on Saturday, June 2.
Mahalo,
Kim in Hawaii
Another film with heart, soul, and aliens is BATTLESHIP . The aliens are more akin to Star Wars than most other alien invasion films. Check out my review at this link.

There are several I have enjoyed. I really enjoyed the series about Mars. It was great reading.
ReplyDeleteSci-fi is my favorite Kim; with Captain Kirk holding a special place in my heart and to this day I consider myself an original Trekkie but of only the original series. I couldn't get to the theater fast enough when Star Wars opened. I'm hoping they will release it in 3D for a limited run. When my 5 year old grandson started taking an interest in all things Star Wars, all my daughter could do was sigh and tell him, "You'll have to ask Gigi." We now have ongoing conversations about stormtroopers, Hans Solo, Darth Vader, et al.
ReplyDeleteI was in heaven with the series FARSCAPE and FIREFLY. I was devastated when both of them were canceled without a moments notice and they didn't even give FIREFLY barely a season. And FIREFLY was brought to us by the genious who gave us such gems as BUFFY and the current box office smash, THE AVENGERS, Joss Whendon.
Yep, I enjoy a good sci-fi and will most likely be at the theater opening week to take a peek at PROMETHEUS.
Great memories! I LOVE the original Star Wars movies. Empire Strikes Back (the really dark one) was my favorite.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to the winners, I have been so busy lately i have been missing all the fun.
ReplyDeleteLOVED STAR WARS It was one of the first movies DH took me to, First DRIVE IN Movie. It is to-date my favorite SIFI movie Saga.
I am waiting for Battleship to come to our theater so we can go...
Have you seen the trailer for THE GREAT GATSBY SO SOOOOOOOOOO looking forward to this one.
Have a great weekend Everyone Ann/alba
Firefly for sure... Although I am a big fan of Star Wars too. :)
ReplyDeleteStar Wars is still my favorite. Took my children to see them all and for my son's 8th birthday he wanted a R2D2 Cake and I actually made and decorated it for him. My hands were numb after all those stars I had to squeeze out to decorate cake. lol
ReplyDeleteCongrats to the winners.

I, too, saw Star Wars many years ago---it will always be my favorite sci-fi.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to the winners.
ReplyDeleteI started out with Twilight Zone - my favorite of all time and Outer Limits. And then Star Trek and will still watch the reruns over and over. Star Wars, Firefly, and lately Avatar. I'm sure there's many more.

ReplyDeleteI can't believe that's it's been that long ago that Star Wars was first released! My sons, now 38 and 39 1/2 were 7 and 8 1/2 at the time! When I was just a little older than that the movie I remember is Old Yeller which was a black and white film and Old Yeller was a dog that wandered into the lives of a farm family and became the son's best friend.
I remember it was a real tear jerker and the boys all got embarrassed when they had teary eyed watching it!
Another comparison which shows how things have changed is that for a quarter you not only got into the movie but also got a soda and popcorn!
I loved Twilight Zone and every Flash Gordon! (Yes, I'm showing my age!?!?!)
ReplyDeleteI love The Matrix movies and Alien. I'm really looking forward to Prometheus and the remake of Total Recall.
ReplyDeleteCongrats winners. My favorites are Star Wars and Twighlight Zone. Thanks for the post.

I love Sci-fi and horror type movies so I'll be checking out Battleship once it hits On Demand. I no longer go to the theatres..I just don't have the patience for kids kicking my seat, listening to crunch n munching and cell phones going off.
